Frequently Asked Questions

Kitchen Countertop FAQs

What type of materials do you carry for countertops?

We have the largest outdoor stone yard in New England, which allows us to stock a large variety of inventory. All our stones are hand-selected by the owners. We provide in-house manufacturing. Our stone selection includes Granite, Quartzite, Marble, Quartz, and Soapstone. Explore our current Stone Slab Inventory to see what we have in stock.

What happens if the material I want isn’t in stock at KCCNE?

We work closely with our trusted vendors to source exactly what you’re looking for, ensuring you get the perfect material to match your style and needs.

How can I receive a countertop quote, and how should I pick out countertops?

We recommend visiting our showroom with a picture of your space and rough dimensions of your desired countertop. If you are trying to match an existing cabinet color, we encourage you to bring in a door/drawer for our sales staff to assist you in the color selection process.

When you visit our showroom, our friendly and knowledgeable sales representatives will help you find the best option for your budget, space, style, and needs. Each material has its unique qualities, and we’ll work closely with you to identify what will work best for you and your home.

Do all kitchen countertops require seams?

It may be necessary to put seams in your countertop depending on the size, layout, and dimensions of your space. You will work directly with our Template Specialist regarding seam placement.

How do I clean my stone countertops?

Mild soap and water are the best natural cleaners for your countertops. A daily countertop cleaner can also be used. We offer Stone Essentials cleaning products that are safe to use on your countertops.

We strongly advise against using harsh chemicals or abrasive pads to clean your stone countertops, as even mild cleaners can sometimes cause damage.

How frequently should I seal my kitchen countertops?

When we install your natural stone countertops, we will seal them once for you. After installation, it is recommended to seal your countertops regularly. Our educated sales staff will inform you on the sealing/care process for your countertops, and we will recommend the best products to use.

Can I cut directly on my kitchen countertops?

Yes, you can cut on your countertop, but we highly recommend using a cutting board to protect the surface and maintain its integrity.

What is the popular countertop trend right now?

Quartzite is a KCCNE favorite. Quartzite offers the elegant, high-end look of marble - with soft veining and unique patterns - but without the high maintenance. It's natural aesthetic makes it a favorite in modern, transitional, and luxury kitchens.

Can I put hot pots and pans directly on my kitchen countertops?

Although natural stone countertops are generally heat-resistant, there is a risk to your countertops at high temperatures. To ensure the longevity of your countertops, we recommend always using protective measures, such as trivets or heat-resistant pads, to prevent potential damage.

Please be advised that never place any hot items directly on quartz surfaces. Quartz is not heat-resistant, and exposure to high temperatures can cause damage, including discoloration or cracking. Always use trivets, heat-resistant pads, or other protective measures to safeguard your quartz countertops.

What temperatures are suitable for countertops?

There is a risk to damage your countertops over a certain temperature, which is listed in the chart below:

Materials Approx. Heat Resistance Crack Risk Temp (Approx.) Notes
Granite Up to 1200°F (650°C) Rarely cracks < 600°F Excellent heat resistance. Can usually handle hot pots briefly.
Quartzite ~1000°F (540°C) Rarely cracks < 500°F Strong and heat-tolerant like granite. Natural, not engineered quartz.
Soapstone ~1000°F (540°C) Rarely cracks < 500°F Extremely heat-resistant. Often used in fireplaces and stoves.
Marble ~480°F (250°C) May crack > 300°F Softer stone, more prone to thermal stress and etching.
Quartz (engineered) ~150°F–300°F (65°C–150°C) Cracking risk > 150°F (65°C), damage > 300°F (150°C) Contains resin that can scorch or crack from direct heat. Least heat-resistant of the group.
Do you fabricate countertops on site?
